Tuxedo Dressing….Positive/Negative is One of Many Variations for This Haute Holiday Dressing Trend

Friday, December 9th, 2011 by Roz Pactor

Rachel Zoe Black & White Tuxedos

The return to prominence of Tuxedo Dressing has been one of those Fall Trends, while popular all season, is very much a NOW look whose time it is to shine.  There is nothing with greater style for Holiday parties or New Year’s Eve dressing than to borrow from the boys, the tuxedo with a feminine twist. One of the newest approaches to the look for this season has been the dominance of White as an alternative to the traditional black tux that I have loved for so many seasons.  Rachel Zoe, stylist and designer of the Stars has done the same tuxedo (shown above) in both colors.  The white has literally been a sell-out, as reported to me by an L.A. shopper and by Tootsies Buyer, Jennifer Cunningham. Holiday Whites…the Many Shades of Snow, a Chic Trend for Holiday/Resort Dressing

So you may ask if I have my seasons mixed up? On a day when Texas weather is feeling a little more like summer, do I dare talk about the color of snow?!  Well, I’ve always been a fan of White and now that the “never wear white after Labor Day” taboo has been lifted, it must be noted that one of the hottest (no pun intended) ideas from the Holiday/Resort Runways, arriving in stores now, was the presence of White as the non-color, color choice as a chic approach to holiday dressing. In fact, my memory takes me back to a visit here by Michael Kors (one of my faves, whose chic style is always so apparent) and when he dressed to accompany me to interviews, wore white pants and a black cashmere turtleneck sweater, in late October, specifically to make this point.  It was a few years ago, he was ahead of his time and in fact, his outfit was a point of discussion with all of his interviewers!!! Barbara Tfank: Liz Taylor was Her Inspiration for Spring 2012, Delivered to Perfection!

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 by Roz Pactor

Dress designer, Barbara Tfank, recent guest designer at Fashion Houston, had a clear point of view when she paraded her stylish, couture-inspired collection down the runways of the recent Fashion Houston shows.  As a designer who was intrigued and often inspired by other great designers, artists and movies, dedicated her Spring 2012 collection to a fresh and modern interpretation of film icon, Elizabeth Taylor, a personal favorite of hers not only for her beauty but also for her generosity and strength.  She left no stone unturned in her designs, her model choices (all Liz-look a-likes), even down to the brunette wigs that all of the girls wore, coifed ala Liz and the exquisite Bulgari serpenti watch, an exact replica of the one given to Ms. Taylor by Richard Burton while filming Cleopatra.  It was a strongly themed collection that drew attention to the early Liz Taylor with garments fitted to that hour-glass figure that was her trademark.  I was so impressed with the quality of her design and beautiful use of fabrics that a follow-up chat with her at Neiman Marcus was a must for me, to learn more about this designer that I had knowledge of sparingly and wanted to learn about and see more of.

Fabiola Arias: Dresses Inspired by Art

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 by Roz Pactor

Fabiola Arias, a recent graduate Parsons began her creative focus in one direction….the Fine Arts.  Her passion was to be a great artist, and painting continues to be very much a part of her life. However, after being awarded a Japanese scholarship, then given to only four young designers, her artistic passions shifted to fashion design.  Fabiola, only in the business for a couple of years now, has created a unique limited collection of daytime and evening dresses that are built on her love of painting.  The texture of her brush strokes are apparent in her designs.  Her concept, while mastered now by her team and manufactured in New York City, sounds simple but must take great expertise and craftsmanship to execute.  She buys yardage of beautiful organza in bold colors and then cuts it all up into various sized petal-like pieces to make her designs.  She says the secret is a masterful template that her makers can follow. All the principles of creating a great canvas are translated into her creations of exquisite dresses that really must be seen to be appreciated.
