It’s August in Houston, the temps are unbearable, you’ve bought several great summer frocks at all of the great sales around town, and where can you wear them without scorching your great “deals” or yourself? Well, one great deal deserves another, I say! You can keep cool, literally, with some great indoor activity that will not break your bank but can do wonders to support another bank, the Houston Food Bank. Yes, it’s that time of year again….Houston Restaurant Weeks begins today, August 1 and continues through August 31. Read the rest of this entry »

If you are a collector of fine, rare wines or a student of wine, whose mission it is to learn from the experts about the richness and quality of special wines, you are in for a treat, like no other, by attending this unique wine and dining event at Tony’s, hosted by Tony Vallone with co-presenter, Jeremy Parzen, a wine writer and Italian food and wine historian. It’s all happening at Tony’s on Thursday evening, July 19th.
The presentation by these gentlemen promises to be both interesting and highly informative. However, the “stars” of the evening are a selection of Italian Wines from deep within Tony’s own wine cellar to be shared for this evening alone. These wines are from three iconic masters from the key wine producing regions of Italy….Piedmont, Veneto and Tuscany. Read the rest of this entry »
The afternoon stop-by at BB1 Classics in Uptown Park was intended for me to have a quick taste of Italy……antipasto and prosecco, provided by Tony’s restaurant, and to meet these (2) women from Milan, Italy that had recently relocated to the states, Houston specifically, that Callie Saitowitz assured me brought a “bag of wares” that I had to see. Such a lover of Italy am I that I am always amazed to meet anyone that could actually leave that country for Texas, but they had their reasons and most importantly brought with them a hot new concept in bag making, manufactured totally in Italy……the zip bag, made by Ghostzip.
Three friends from Milan had an idea: a zipper that once done became a bag of many sizes, shapes and colors and other novelty items such wine canisters (this is Italy, so a must, right!) and even large bean bag chairs. The concept must be seen to totally grasp it, but imagine someone handing you a handful of connected zippers that when you zip them they take the shape of a clutch bag, a tote, a cellphone holder…..are you getting it yet? What also makes it so great for travel is that when you want to pack it or wash it, you can just unzip it and the space needed diminishes greatly. Once you’ve seen it and experienced it you will see why this relatively new concept, only in the U.S. since March of this year (2012) and in Italy since 2009, that is surprisingly affordable, took off like a hot panini when introduced to a trade show in Milan and immediately sold enough zips to make over two thousand bags! So it’s that time of year once again, when we look for the perfect small token to show Mom just how much we appreciate her and all that she does and means to us in our lives. The gift options are a-plenty as Moms are people too and have so many different interests, tastes, and as a Mom I can say, like just about anything their child gives them on this day…..there is no other day that is as much “about the thought” than this designated day for Moms. I know I have always dreamed of the day when Karl Lagerfeld would personally choose me to be the face of Chanel. I was his dinner partner once here at Tony’s in Houston, after a Fragrance P.A., but somehow he didn’t see it?! However, for Gossip Girl star Blake Lively, who we must admit is on top of her fashion game, she has also had dreams of one day modeling exclusively for Chanel. “I had other opportunities and I would say, ‘Thank you so much, but I am holding out for Chanel,’” she told the New York Times. “That’s who I want to be the face of,” and people would say, ‘Well, that’s unrealistic, they only hire Europeans,’ and I said: ‘Well, how great. I’ll be the first then.’” Read the rest of this entry »
