From Farm to Table, Benjy Levit’s New Restaurant, Local Foods

Friday, November 4th, 2011 by Roz Pactor

Benjy Levit has done it again!  He has gone above and beyond and is bringing Houston another unique and delicious restaurant.  Local Foods, located at 2424 Dunstan, which is next to Levits’ other Rice Village restaurant institution (benjy’s), will be opening its doors this Saturday, November 5.

Local Foods, which has provided Levit the opportunity to expand into the neighborhood, “will offer customers a fast, casual, walk-up counter concept centered on locally sourced items,” and food that comes straight from the farm and goes to your table.  Talk about fresh!  The menu is another important feature to look at.  At Local Foods, the menu will be ever changing and will provide customers the opportunity to grab-and-go.  We will see sandwiches, salads, sides, fresh seafood, and Texas-derived products from some well-known Texas vendors.

In order to capture the appropriate aesthetic for this venue, Benjy Levit teamed up with Aaron Rambo, designer and collector of Found.  The team will incorporate a farmhouse kitchen feel, using retro-looking equipment, vintage bakery carts, and a “Mondrian-inspired” wall for decoration.  The restaurant will also provide a cozier setting for those that don’t want to eat on the go.  They will provide communal tables and outside patio seating.

RELISH the Idea…Fast, Healthy Food, Could It Be?!

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011 by Roz Pactor

Exactly, could there really be such a thing in this fast-paced, busy world that we all live in daily, where we could actually run in, pick up some food for ourselves or our families, that’s also good for us?!  Well, it is happening. This brainchild of French Culinary Institute, NY, Grad, Addie D’agostino, is just that.  This easily accessible take-out eatery is stocked full of sandwiches, salads and market sides that are all made using local, seasonal ingredients, brought in fresh daily and prepared in the simplest but most flavorful ways. Bellissimo….Pizzeria Alto Opens in West Ave.

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 by Roz Pactor

Pizzeria Alto, the newest of Schiller-Del Grande’s urban chic restaurant duo in West Ave. has opened, and I have already got my favorites after many dining trips there, from their selection of designer pizzas.  Being a creature of habit if I love something, I already have a new favorite food addiction at this restaurant. The gorgonzola and white cheese pizza, with a bed of bitter arugula, contrasted by the sweetness of mission figs, is the first thing I order upon arrival. These pizzas and delectable shareables have been created by Chef Robert Del Grande in his 2 ½ ton, gold tiled, gas-fired stone pizza oven like the ones I just recently saw in bakeries and pizzerias all over Italy.  This oven serves as the centerpiece of this beautifully lit second-floor eatery. Eco-Chic Find……..One Green Street

Thursday, January 28th, 2010 by Roz

Ready to shop GREEN? One Green Street is open for you….

Proprietor, Sherry Eichberger had a dream, literally, of a healthier, happy world and from that dream founded One Green Street, an organic lifestyle destination for all. This is not just a store but the cornerstone of a concept that was created to educate all of us about living eco-friendly lives. Every aspect of the store has been designed and constructed from sustainable products.
It starts, as all great retail environments should, with carefully selected products from socially responsible vendors that were hand-picked by Sherry and her hubby, Dave. This unique selection includes must have items in beauty, fashion and home accessories, all designed to give the consumer choices that are chocked full of fashion, enhanced by their eco-minded message. The end result was lots to look at, understand and purchase, which made my entire shopping experience there such fun! It’s great to see how sustainable products are evolving. You will no longer be forced to make the choice of buying fashion or green?! One Green Street’s selection proves that you can have both!

Some of the options are….
* W3LL People cosmetics….all natural luxury, mineral-based, toxin-free beauty collection; wow, it’s got to make you glow!
* Beer Soap Co…….made from, you guessed it, some of your favorite spirits; one of my faves was “Black Pepper and Lime” from Corona, also, Red Dawn from Samuel Adams and of course, I’ve always been a Heineken girl and loved “Pale Lager”…….and no, the fragrance is a fresh scent, you need not worry that you will be smelling like your last night’s over-indulgence?!
*Billy Jealousy….an organic cosmeceutical line of luscious creams for guys and gals; Shaving cream just voted #1 by Esquire Mag.
*A Lot to Say……an adorable line of cotton t’s and undies, imprinted with witty sayings
*Mandika Bags.…handbags “upcycled” from Men’s Suits; must see to believe, they’re darling
*Ruby Sue…..fabric rose clustered tie necklaces, embellished with stones; this fabric jewelry trend is all over Europe these days and was so well executed that I have had my own dream of the Red Rose Necklace that has my name all over it!
*Loomstate…..unisex line of sustainable fashion jeans and shirts

I could go on and on about so many of the one-of-a-kind items that intrigued me so. I am still enamored by their unique usage of many of the everyday products we have around us that have been recycled or upcycled in a way that gives them a second life, so much more interesting than their first!

Sherry has developed eco-icon stickers for each item that tells you if it’s organic, handmade, natural, recycled or upcycled, my new favorite buzz word that means, “taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value.”

So, drop in to One Green Street and check it out. Your choice is either to just hang out in “The Gathering Place,” space where guests are invited to enjoy a warm seating area in the Home section or to Shop! You will be educated, you will definitely have fun, you will make a purchase, I’m sure, and you will be supporting the environment in a very special way!

Chic Find……….Three Top Notch Designers Under One Roof

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 by Roz

Chic Find: Three Top Notch Designers under One Roof…….so, if you only think you can find these ladies at Trunk Shows or by appointment, then you’ll be happy to know that things have changed!

Nobility Studio has opened on San Felipe……
2413 San Felipe; Tues., Thurs., Sat., 11 am-4 pm

First, there is the Jewelry Designer, Patricia Peckinpaugh, who has taken her inspiration from her travels and from her many years growing up in Mexico City, to create an exquisite collection of baubles, made from either 18 kt. gold or from her latest discovery of hand-cast Bronze that has been dipped or bathed in gold. This is a technique that Patricia developed to keep prices down and design high…….all are stand-alone metal pieces or have been combined with Pearls and Semi-precious stones, such as the luscious Cuffs featured here of dipped golden Bronze and freshwater pearl flowers. Her collection is far too extensive to describe here, got to stop by and see for yourself and pick a few golden treats that would make Santa proud! An extra good-to-know fact about Patricia’s jewels is that they are featured from time to time on one of my fave fashion websites……Vivre.com and that says alot about her style! also have to visit www.PatriciaPeckinpaugh.com

Second, luxury handbag guruMini Baird is back from her slight siesta from the business…….and her bags have never been more scrumptuous. My favorites were the ruffle bags shown here. Mini’s treatment of luxury exotic skins cannot be outdone and add to that her magnificent taste level and you have a selection of truly beautiful bags. Mini’s collection, Baird & Baird of handbags and accessories for the ladies, with a few giftables for the guys as well, is also a part of this great collaboration of the three ladies that call Nobility Studio home!

Last, but most definitely not least are the surprises upstairs…….Nobility is a collection of apparel that has been co-designed by Patricia Peckinpaugh and Molly Hubbard with the stay-at-home entertaining fashionista in mind. They have designed an easy but elegant collection of silk items that are priced to buy in multiples. A fave of the girls, is this long silk dupioni hostess skirt which they are selling at $275 and blowing out the door in any one of the 12 colors that they offer. The fun thing about this is, you can add a t-shirt and sandals to dress it down for the beach house or dress it up with a cashmere sweater for a holiday party. They offer camis, duster coats, shawls…….very few items, in lots of colors, at great prices to make you want to keep coming back for more!
