American Designer, Lubov Azria, Brings Her Collections Back “Home” to Texas….She Lived in San Antonio in Her Early Years

Thursday, December 6th, 2012 by maeganRoosa

What a life story for Lubov Azria…born in the Ukraine where she studied ballet under Bolshoi Junior Company.  Is then forced to leave Russia, heads to San Antonio, Texas where her family has friends and she lived for several of her early years.  I can only imagine the culture shock, but Lubov answered “yes ma’am” when I asked if this was true and says she considered herself a Texan at heart, but not for long as she then moved to L.A.  Her love was art, but realizing that making a living could be difficult, went to FIDM Fashion School in L.A., and found a new passion. She went for a job interview with Max Azria, 21 years ago, was hired, married her boss a year later, and the end result has been a beautifully close collaboration between Lubov and Max that has created for her a top design responsibility and title and a 20 brand empire that the two oversee.

As we chatted at Neiman Marcus after I had seen both runway shows at Fashion Houston, I asked her to talk to me about the lines that I had seen and a brief glimpse of each customer.  She felt it was important to understand that there really are three lines…. Read the rest of this entry »

A Behind-the-Scenes Visit with David Peck and His Spring/Summer Collection…

O.K. I admit it, I am a card-carrying David Peck groupie!  I have followed this local designer whose popularity is growing each season with his CROP Collection definitely becoming a force to be recognized and dealt with nationwide. He added 30 new stores for Spring that translates locally to a mega business at Tootsies, with the addition of Cunningham & Co., Mint Uptown Park and BHLDN.  It’s been amazing to watch as I feel I was there when it all began for him and was thrilled when viewing his collection in NYC during Fashion Week, joined by national publications such as Vanity Fair and Vogue as well as some NYC shop owners as they eagerly reviewed his collection, off-site at the ACE Hotel.  He also made the cover of WWD and Vogue has several garments out now for a possible story. From Fashion Houston: Meet Rubin Singer…Third Generation Couturier That Comes to Designing Beautifully Crafted Garments Naturally…

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

For Ruben Singer, recently in town showing his Spring 2013 collection for Fashion Houston and Neiman Marcus, it could be said that designing beautifully crafted garments was in his DNA.  His father, a gifted designer in Russia, produced his creations for the Bolshoi Ballet and his grandfather, for whom he is named, was the most celebrated designer in the Soviet Union designing for Russian royalty, political dignitaries and social elite.  His lineage of master craftsmen is apparent in his couture approach to his collection. The final garments, which he says he creates from an old world couture point of view, are modernized to empower today’s woman. Read the rest of this entry »

Two Brothers Create Men’s Bogosse Collection, French for “Good Looking Man”…

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

Attention fellas: This is a story of the two brothers Tardieu, originally from Haiti.  One, Fabrice, worked for many years for Emporio Armani accessories and the other, Patrick, was the Captain of the Haitian National Soccer Team, an avid player who was not that interested in fashion.  These two men that had traveled the globe and studied in Europe had developed quite definite ideas of how men should dress.  They joined forces eight years ago when Patrick could never be pleased with any of the dress shirts that he was given to select from and decided to create the perfect one and solicited his experienced fashion bro. to assist. Zac Posen Closes Night #2 of Fashion Houston to Cheering Crowds…

Monday, November 19th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

Zac Posen, who I referred to as our “fashion prodigy” when we chatted at Neiman Marcus the morning after his crowd-pleasing showing at Fashion Houston the night before, seemed to shy away from that handle.  He had grown up in a loft in the early days of So Ho’s fashion prosperity, in a very creative environment supported by his artist father and feminist mother and sisters. He loved making clothes for his sisters and their friends due largely to his “love for women and making them look beautiful.” At 16 he had an internship with Nicole Miller and was then off to study at the prestigious St. Martin’s in London, where he became popular there as a student that also studied under an avant garde British designer before coming back to his home in New York City. All of this before he was 20. Read the rest of this entry »

Greek Born Designer, Fotini, Brings Her Feminine, Lady-Like Collection to Fashion Houston

Monday, November 19th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

Greek born designer, Fotini, was born in Athens but raised and educated in Canada.  In fact, she only made the move to New York City a couple of years ago.  She has spent several years traveling to Europe, especially Italy where she spent three years studying corsetry in the Lake Como region where that form of garment construction is their specialty and has in fact, become a passion of hers.  It was while studying there that she decided to start her own brand in 2006 that was built at first primarily on evening and cocktail, which is still her favorite part of the collection.  She later decided to expand her concept to include suitings, day dresses and separates in order to build a more cohesive brand for her customers. Prints Charming

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

The caftan, a style that has remained popular for many, has been elevated to chic-ness by Camilla Franks, a designer that awed all of us that saw her show during Fashion Houston last October.  The vibrant color, pattern and designs in caftans, leggings, rompers took over the stage  making the entire crowd so enthusiastic for her collection.  We were all anxious to see it all live at Tootsies at the trunk show the next day but unfortunately, it was only available that day after the show for special order and then was flown away to her next stop. The Talented Mr. Hannant Takes Us On a Trip to London Town!

Friday, February 24th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

Although I had heard of Douglas Hannant, I really became more knowledgeable and admirable of his work when I saw his show and met him briefly at Fashion Houston in October of 2011.  His show was my last for NY Fashion Week and was held in a small intimate space in the Lincoln Center Library where his décor was all warm and cozy and his audience appeared filled with many long-term clients that sat in great anticipation of viewing the collection.
