Sensual, Soulful, Sculptural….In Her Own Words, Donna Karan Describes Her Fall 2013 Collection

Friday, February 22nd, 2013 by Roz Pactor

No one does sexy, body hugging apparel better than Donna Karan, and when she showed her newest collection in New York Fashion Week she definitely returned to what she does best.  She first, admittedly, stepped back to the concept that she began her business on in the 80’s……what she has always referred to as seven easy pieces and this collection was its evolution.

There was lots of richly colored draped jersey in colors that kicked off with Essential Black, leading into every metal shade of Gray and Stone to a warm earthy Brown. Touches that modernized the stretch jersey that clinged to every body curve was the use of slits in all of the right places that revealed skin or mesh inserts.  There was also lots of layering with capelets over dresses (one of my favorite add-on pieces this Fall), curly fur shearlings, jackets and coats that were luxuriously made of wool and cashmere with the addition of neoprene to give it that body-hugging, fitted styling and were layered, in many cases, over one another.(coats as a layering piece another favorite look of mine)

Accessories that I especially loved were the sculpted body jewelry sliced with silver or gold in cuffs, collars and belts. I was wild about the elbow length suede gloves, and also crazy for the pure-suede platform shoes and over the knee boots. Read the rest of this entry »

My favorites of the evening: Kate Hudson in black/gold Alexander McQueen; Tina Fey in L’Wren Scott and Amy Pohler in Stella McCartney Tuxedo; Julianne Moore in black/white Tom Ford. Photos courtesy of fashionista.com

As we all know the Awards Season has begun and as always is our first indication what designers, stylists and the stars themselves feel are the most important looks that they want to stand for this season. The Golden Globes is always our first official kick-off to the Red Carpet Season and one of the most lovely party of them all. Read the rest of this entry »

Donna Karan’s Houston Ambassadors Join with Saks and DK to present Resort 2013 Collection to Invitation-only audience luncheon….Style is on the Menu!

Black assymetical slit-neck Jersey gown

Houston was very fortunate to be part of a nationwide search that Donna Karan’s team conducted, looking for women that gave much back to their community and also possess an added bonus of a great sense of style.  Houston is lucky to have not just one special lady in this style-exclusive group, but two:  Sheridan Williams and Dancie Ware.  On Wednesday, November 28, several women were treated to view a special invite-only showing, by these Ambassadors, of Donna’s newest Resort 2013 collectionSaks, General Manager, Terry Zmyslo teamed up with DK’s Director of Retail Stylists, Curtis Farnham and a small collection of models to treat us all to a first-hand look at her newest collection. The added touch of good will, was that Saks, not only brought much of the collection to Hotel ZaZa to peruse but any of this collection purchased over the 3-day Houston stay benefited our very own MD Anderson…..so it was a win-win for all and such a fun way to leisurely sip on sparkle and have a delightful lunch with friends.

Red one shoulder layered dress

About the Collection: To those of us that are long-time followers, it was all “so Donna”.  A color palate built on solids, prints from Donna are virtually non-existent.  Fabrics were familiar…essential matte jersey, soft knits with some crinkle fabrications.  Styling reflected many of her signature looks….always playing on her strength, with emphasis on shoulders and décolletage, Donna can fit a woman’s body like no other.  The end result is high-styled sexiness that is fit to perfection to flatter the woman.  Signature looks such as lots of rusching, cold shoulder, asymmetrical necklines were all present in this very-Donna collection.  The color palette was made of black, slate and as always in her collections, pops of bold Red.  One of my favorites that I still own in my DK archives is her touches of the color, Blush….this time done in an all over rusched day dress worn by popular Houston model, Yuan Yuan and featured above…..to me the color blush is synonymous with Donna Karan.

The Stylistas in the crowd were too many to mention:  (some are shown below) but it can be assured that many, including myself were shopping for that perfect item after the show, although all sales for the weekend went toward the MDA fund.  Let’s hope that this fun, fashion event brought in lots of money for MD Anderson and returns the Donna Karan team  to NYC with much enthusiasm exhibited by this chic Houston group, brought together by Sheridan and Dancie!  Thank you ladies. Donna Karan’s Spring 2013 Preview…Soft, Modern Dressing

Friday, October 5th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

I’m back again, giving you my Friday taste of Spring 2013 as I saw it at New York’s Fashion Week.  I’m gradually feeding you next season, a little different than I’ve done in the past, as we are simultaneously attempting to begin to feel and live our current season of Fall 2012. Anyone that has read my blogs knows that I am a longtime Donna Karan fan and follower, and was so excited to be able to attend her show this time.  It truly did not disappoint. The excitement and energy of the A-list crowd in the room was there as everyone gathered to see what this legendary lady of fashion had to present for the coming season.

Not sure that I have seen many a designer make as significant a change from one season to the next as Donna did with this one.  If you go into the stores now and see her current Fall collection, you will see a much more structured, darker, very tailored pin-stripe suited looks for Fall.  Her upcoming Spring collection could not be more opposite.  The mood was much more ethereal…..soft color palette, fitted yet flowing dresses…almost with a feeling taken from the ballet.  Could not be more of a contrast in hard last season versus the softness of the coming season. Navy is Back as Fall’s Newest Neutral

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

Versace Leather Dress; Ippollita Navy Drop Earrings; Christian Louboutin Navy Shoes

Navy for this season is definitely the New Neutral.  Dare I say it’s the new Black? It isn’t, it’s the New Navy and Black is still there as strong as ever. Navy, a personal favorite of mine, will not replace Black in my wardrobe, but will take on a life of its own. In fact, if you really want to show off the return of this favorite color in its newest, most sophisticated way, do as the Europeans began a few seasons back and wear it WITH Black.  It also looks new and fresh popped with the brightness of white or a hot fall hue or wear it mono-chromatically head-to-toe! Friday, April 20th, 2012 by Roz Pactor

In a season that has been a-buzz with Bold Color and Soft Pastels, the time has arrived to step out in the color that dominated the runways back in September…the number one non-color, color for Spring/Summer 2012 that ruled the runways was WHITE. Shown newest, White-on-White.  You could also never go wrong wearing it as Black & White or as the crisp neutral against a pop of color! Read the rest of this entry »

Louboutin Fur Shoes; Dior Fur Bag; Akris Fur Collars; Fendi Fur Blouse

Another cool front is due to arrive in Texas tonight and the timing is just right to talk to one of Fashion’s biggest trends for Fall.  Nothing has more glam-appeal as an add-on to your wardrobe than Fur, either real or faux, and the designers have gone for this trend in a big way for this Fall Season!  The approach this season is new and is being used either as complete garments or as touches to convert traditional pieces into something fantastical! The Colors of Fall 2011

Fall is arriving in the stores and the colors are a great combo of vibrant, warm and neutral with a brilliant mix of variations of the tried and true. What’s exciting this season is that each family of color is highlighted with a touch of newness that is having its revival.  I’ve chosen the four, in order of importance to me, that I feel to be the base of what color for Fall 2011 is all about. Not Your Basic Cover(up)s

Dolce & Gabbana iPad Cases

Dolce & Gabbana iPad Cases

So Father’s Day is behind us and we ladies have all taken care of the Dad in our life and in many cases, I’m sure he received something techie for his big day. Wouldn’t be a surprise if many Dads got iPads, Kindles, Nooks and/or the appropriate cover to accompany it.  While the men may have settled on the basics….black or brown leather or maybe a step-up to alligator, we techie women have our iPads too but, as usual, our cover(up)s are all about fashion. The reason is simple…every designer is on to this and is making the cover, the hautest new accessory of the moment.  They are available at every price range, color and pattern.  Each designer has come up with clever ways for women to look terribly stylish, chic or whimsical…whoever you are, whatever your style, they have a choice for you.
