What better way to discover tomorrow’s newest fashion talent than to challenge them to reinvent and make their own, fashion’s true classic, The Little Black Dress. This was the concept that the founder of this fashion competition, Jeff Shell of Neal Hamil Model Agency, developed in 2009.  Known as The Little Black Dress Project and celebrating its 4th year on May 8th, it has become one of Texas’ largest fashion design competitions.  There are 13 celebrity judges from Houston’s fashion scene that you all know from Chloe Dao and Elaine Turner (also including yours truly) plus this fun night of fashion event is being chaired by Linda Kuykendall, Vicki Rizzo and Leisa Holland-Nelson. Prints Charming

The caftan, a style that has remained popular for many, has been elevated to chic-ness by Camilla Franks, a designer that awed all of us that saw her show during Fashion Houston last October.  The vibrant color, pattern and designs in caftans, leggings, rompers took over the stage  making the entire crowd so enthusiastic for her collection.  We were all anxious to see it all live at Tootsies at the trunk show the next day but unfortunately, it was only available that day after the show for special order and then was flown away to her next stop. Simply Beautiful Dresses…

Bibhu Mohapatra may not be a household name yet to many, but this veteran of nine years with J. Mendel is quickly becoming one of Fashion’s Rising Stars.  A native of India, he studied at F.I.T., interned for Halston and went on to be head designer and creative director for J. Mendel before launching his own collection three years ago in February 2009.  He has been the recipient of many awards since he has branched out on his own and is a member of C.F.D.A., the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America. Alberta Ferretti Capsule Collection for Macy’s Impulse Areas Launches Today, Tuesday, April 17th

Known around the world for her red carpet looks and easy glamour, Alberta Ferretti has been tapped by Macy’s to design their newest capsule collection for summer.  In the new exclusive collection, Ferretti has designed pieces inspired by the casual chic of Italy’s Amalfi Coast. “The collection I created is fresh and bright, featuring light summer clothing that evokes the spirit of my beautiful country and is at the same time true to my style,” Ferretti says.  The line features 30 pieces within the price range of $49 to $119.  The pieces are very feminine, bohemian and delicate featuring lots of chiffon, lace, and gorgeous floral details.  The vibrant collection will be available at Macy’s and at macys.com today, April 17th, 2012. 52 Hours in Austin, In Chic Sheet Style…Sorry NYT’s 36 Just Not Enough!

Question: What have I been longing for? Answer: A visit to my favorite Texas town that didn’t involve a wedding, conference or another event weekend that, while they are always fun, is definitely packed with an agenda that is not my own.

So when an opportunity came my way that would take me to Capital-town and allow me to make my own agenda….shopping and eating at some of Austin’s hippest! I couldn’t resist and hitched a ride with my better-half who had some bus. in the city and allowed me to be free to shop till I dropped……easy Austin-style!

I’m recapping some of my highlights from my days there, in hopes that you too can experience some free days in this great city to follow my path.  I’d like to go back and do the same trip for art and music but couldn’t get it in this time. Read the rest of this entry »
