If there weren’t enough restaurant happenings on the Upper Kirby scene for you, we have another to add to the list that is a little bit familiar in name but has a different vibe than how we’ve known it. This exciting new eatery dishing up creative twists on American comfort classics is Del Frisco’s Grille and it opened with a bang on March 16th. It was a great party night but also for us, it was a great night of meeting the peeps behind the scene that will be the mainstay of this well-established eatery with a new twist. Anyone who follows me knows that Fashion is more my expertise, and that a food critic I am not, nor do I pretend to be. Although, eating and being a foodie is also my passion. So, I do love fashion but I must say that Michelle Obama’s Inaugural Thom Browne ensemble or Jason Wu dress did not put nearly the smile on my face that writing this post has done for me. I’ve made no secret that Johnny Carrabba is one of mi familia that has always made me proud of his success at making the Original Carrabba’s one of my favorite Italian food hang-outs. Their yummy food is reminiscent to me of much of what I grew up eating and is my regular go-to place for those special items that are a mainstay in any Italian home. So when Johnny told me about his first step-out from only Italian fare, as the beginning of his very aggressive expansion plan for the Carrabba namesake, I couldn’t wait to try it and brought my family along to test it out! When I visited Underbelly, Chris Shepherd’s newest and first of his own, eateries last week, I had to be very persuasive to get in and was told since they were so packed that we would have to sit at a front community table, but was assured by the very nice, accommodating maitre’ de, James, that it would be a fun experience because we could be right up there at the open kitchen and could really watch Chris work. Well, it was a great experience. We sat between some fun people, the energy was contagious throughout, especially in the main dining room that was both spacious and homey. Well, all the hype has become reality, we’ve got it…Uchi, the critically acclaimed Austin restaurant has opened its doors here in Houston on Westheimer and Montrose, in none other than the original iconic Felix Restaurant where many of us Houston natives grew up feasting on Mexican food. With the tastiness of James Beard Foundation winner of Best Chef/Southwest, Tyson Cole’s Japanese cuisine taking over the place, all the local foodies have a new fave restaurant to frequent that offers lots of fresh, unique treats for the pallet.
